England Break Penalty Jinx, Advance Into Quarterfinals

England are into the quarterfinals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, after a pulsating encounter that required penalties at Moscow’s Spartan Stadium.

After a nervy opening, England dictated the tempo of the game and were rewarded with several opportunities. Without their injured star, James Rodriguez, Colombia rarely posed a threat, relying on quick counter attacks.

The second half kicked off with a better from England as captain, Harry Kane converted a penalty after being brought down in the penalty area. With the game nearing the final whistle, Colombia snatched an equaliser through Yerry Mina in the 93rd minute.

Although both teams pushed for a winner in extra time, penalties were ultimately needed to decide the outcome. England which had lost all of their three previous shoot-outs at the World Cup finally overcame this jinx to win 4-3 and clinch a quarterfinal spot.
