I have come to serve, were the exact words of the Lord Mayor of Port Harcourt City Council, Honourable Victor Nyeche Ihunwo JP, speaking yesterday Friday to the members and entire staff of the City Council, at the council secretariat, headquartered at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
He was formerly welcomed in a written address read by the vice chairman of NULGE in Port Harcourt City Council, Comrade Ogbonna Fredrick, on behalf of the Chairman of NULGE in Port Harcourt City Council, congratulated the Lord Mayor on his electoral victory at the June 16th LGA Poll and commended the Lord Mayor for the on-going projects his administration had embarked on on assumption of office while appealing to the Lord Mayor to prioritize the issues of staff salaries, wages, allowances and welfare.
He also used the same medium to assure the Lord Mayor of their loyalty, commitment, dedication to duties and their steadfastness.
In his response, the Lord Mayor assured the workers of his readiness to serve the people.
“I have come to serve; When I came to this council, I moved round the Council with the HLGA, HPM and the Treasurer, I found out that the buildings in the Council were dilapidated and I said to myself: I can’t allow the Council to be like this, I will put up new structures here and remodel the old ones whether money was available or not, I told them that you must not have millions of Naira to work, but if you have the will, the desire to work that you can achieve something with the little resources available,” he said.
He said his administration will also revamp the Staff Quarters, which is also in a sorry state, after the completion of the projects within the premises of the Council’s Secretariat, and make the application for the allotment of the Quarters opened to all the members of staff.
The Lord Mayor didn’t fail to reprimand the workers over their lackadaisical attitude towards their job, and vowed that his administration will put a stop to that by ensuring they sign in, at resumption and sign out, at closure beginning from Monday the 13th of August, 2018, saying one thing his administration won’t condole is, indiscipline.
He assured the workers of his cooperation and assured them that they will get whatever they are entitled to.
“In as much as you work with me, I will cooperate with you and whatever that is due you, I will give to you.
I have not come to make problems with anybody, I have always told people that it is God that gives power and I want to let you people to know that as the chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area that if I fail, We have all failed but by the special grace of God we won’t fail, but I also want to tell you people that the right things must be done at all times,” he said in his closing remarks.
